KARI

Dimitri sinks onto the sofa next to me, plucking my mug from my hand and putting it on the coffee table, then he loops his arm around my shoulders and pulls me towards him. Even though I don’t want to lean against him because I want to try to be as strong as possible, I can’t help it when I sink into him, resting my head on his shoulder.

I know that I shouldn’t have been listening to him when he was talking to his brother, but I couldn’t help it. I don’t really know Merrick. The two of us never spent a lot of time together when we were younger, but it’s obvious that he and Dimitri not only really get along, but also value the other person’s opinion.

“Vinnie isn’t going to give me up without a fight, is he?” I finally ask, shifting position a bit so that I can look up at Dimitri’s face. His jaw is set and tight and he runs his fingers through my hair almost absentmindedly, like he’s got to try to come up with an answer for me.

“He isn’t,” Dimitri finally confirms, “but neither am I. I’m not going to back down, Kari, and I’m certainly not just going to hand you over to him. You don’t have to worry about something like that happening, okay? I promise you.”

If there’s one thing that I know about Dimitri, it’s that he keeps his promises. That scares me, because men like him aren’t kind, and the promises that he makes might not always be the type that I want. I swallow hard, nodding, then press my face harder into his chest.

He’s solid muscle and his chest doesn’t give an inch when I snuggle into him. Still, it feels good to be this close to him and I breathe him in, enjoying the dark smell of his cologne.

“Do you and Merrick really think that you’ll be able to figure out who tried to kill me?”

I feel him stiffen. It’s a tiny movement that other people might not notice, but I do. I can tell that he’s not sure where this conversation is going to go, but neither am I.

“You really don’t know who it might have been?”

I hear it in his voice, the little bit of doubt that maybe I haven’t been entirely honest with him. It hurts to hear it there, but I’m pretty sure that I get it. I don’t know if I would believe him, if the tables were turned.

Pushing off of his thigh so that I can look at him, I shake my head. “Dimitri,” I say, my heart twisting a little bit at what it feels like to say his name, “you really have to believe me. I have no idea who would want to kill me. Kill my dad? Sure, but me . . .?”

It’s the first time that I’ve thought about my dad and I suddenly feel my throat close up. I choke a little bit, trying to fight back the tears that suddenly burn the corners of my eyes.
